LANSING, Mich. -The University of Michigan Health System’s Hope@UMHS program was honored for its work providing community health services, winning the Michigan Health & Hospital Association’s 2012 Ludwig Community Benefit Award today.
Others honored were programs led by Harbor Beach Community Hospital; Metro Health, Wyoming; and Sparrow Clinton Hospital, St. Johns. The award is named in memory of Patric E. Ludwig, a former MHA president who championed investing in the community’s overall health, and is presented to member organizations integrally involved in collaborative programs to improve the health and well-being of area residents. Each winner will receive $3,000 from the MHA Health Foundation to assist in its health improvement efforts.
The University of Michigan Health System expanded its longtime support of theHope Clinic in Ypsilanti by launching Hope@UMHS to provide services that are unavailable at the Hope Clinic site.
Beginning in 2010 with free quarterly clinics for specialized ear, nose and throat services at U-M facilities, this model of care has expanded to include plastic surgery, gastroenterology, the Kellogg Eye Center, and dermatology services.
Hope@UMHS allows volunteering specialists to provide services in locations better suited to complex cases. The medical teams debrief after each clinic, and each specialty department learns from the others.
Hope@UMHS has resulted in newly diagnosed conditions that were potentially life-threatening; referrals for subspecialty treatment and surgery; more than a dozen people receiving free prescription eyeglasses; more than a dozen diagnostic colonoscopies; and 35 plastic surgery interventions for such things as removing cancer lesions.
Based in Lansing, the MHA represents all of Michigan’s community hospitals and successfully advocates on behalf of hospitals and the patients they serve. The MHA addresses key issues in the legislative and regulatory arenas to advance initiatives that protect quality, cost-effective and accessible care. To learn more, visit www.mha.org.
