Statement on alleged morphine diversion

The University of Michigan Health System cooperates fully with law enforcement in all matters involving criminal offenses alleged to have occurred on our premises.

The person identified in the media as being a UMHS employee has not been employed at UMHS since September 7, 2008.
UMHS has strict measures in place to track inventory of medications and detect potential diversion. We encourage the reporting of all concerns and offer a number of ways for our faculty, staff, patients, families and visitors to report concerns and problems. These include Internet-based forms and phone hotlines, some of which allow for anonymous or confidential reporting.
It is important to note that even if medication is diverted from an intravenous bag that feeds into an automatic medication pump, the patient will still receive the full intended dose of medication because the intravenous bag is replaced each time it runs out. The bag might be replaced more frequently than originally intended, but the patient will receive the full intended dose of medication.
