Natural tissue reconstruction

There are two main types of breast reconstruction: an implant reconstruction and a natural tissue reconstruction, known as "flap" procedures. When performing a flap reconstruction, the plastic surgeon uses tissue from a donor site of your body to reconstruct the breast.

The most common natural reconstructions uses tissue from the lower abdomen. These are either a DIEP flap or TRAM flap procedure. If there is not enough fatty tissue available on the lower abdomen, a surgeon may suggest alternative donor sites, including the shoulder or thigh.
