Digestive Health and Liver Disease
The University of Michigan Health System is home to one of the largest digestive health and liver disease programs in the country, providing prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Our 40-plus physicians are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of all diseases of the gastrointestinal system, including:
- Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis and other inflammatory bowel disorders
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and other Functional bowel disorder
- Liver diseases such as fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis and cirrhosis
- Colon polyps and colon cancer screening
- Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD)
- Constipation
- Hepatitis
- Wilson Disease
Our doctors are skillfully trained to perform the following screening and diagnostic procedures:
- Colonoscopy
- Sigmoidoscopy (an examination of the lower 20 inches of the colon)
- Upper endoscopy (a procedure to check for ulcers and other abnormalities)
More specialized procedures are performed at the University Hospital Medical Procedures Unit.
