Khaled S. Hafez, MD Associate Professor of Urology Khaled S. Hafez, MD is a native of Egypt who received his Doctoral Degree (Board Certification) in Urology, his Masters of Science in Urology and his Bachelors Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Cairo University School of Medicine. After his residency, he accepted a position as an Assistant Professor of Urology at the Cairo University School of Medicine. In 1994, Dr. Hafez joined the staff of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio where he completed a 3 year fellowship in renal cancer surgery and kidney transplantation with the late, legendary, Andrew Novick. He trained in general surgery at the Cleveland Clinic and completed his third year of residency in urology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center prior to joining the urology residency program at the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Hafez joined the faculty of the University of Michigan Urology Center in July 2004 – initially splitting his time between the Medical School and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. His clinical research focuses on renal cancer and the role of nephron sparing surgery as well as bladder and testicular malignancies. He has multiple basic science projects investigating renal physiology, oncology and immunology as well as multiple clinical trials for adjuvant therapy in high risk localized renal cancer patients. Dr. Hafez held the positions Chief of Urology and associate Chief of General Surgery at the Ann Arbor VA Hospital. He continues to be actively involved in patient care over the last ten years and is currently a member of the National Urology VA Advisory Committee. In 2013 he accepted the position of the Urology Residency Program Director. As Program Director, he is fully committed to provide the best possible training, education and career opportunities for residents. It is his mission to assure that the program is one of the best, if not the best in the Country.
After rising quickly in a number of intramural and extramural positions within the VA, Dr. Hafez has settled spending the majority of his time at Michigan, where colleagues say he has become an “epicenter” for complex renal surgery – much of which is performed at the Cardiovascular Center, due to the concomitant bypasses related to renal cell carcinomas with venacaval thrombi – that he has become adept at handling. Dr. Hafez also handles difficult bladder cancers, urinary diversions and has adapted his skills to include using robots for renal sparing surgeries.
In addition to his technical skill and sophistication, Dr. Hafez is also widely recognized as a humble and extraordinarily compassionate surgeon, and is frequently found at the bedside of patients in distress, throughout the night or over the weekend, being there for them during difficult recoveries and even through difficult end-of-life passages. Those who work with him stress that Dr. Hafez is loved by his patients, their families, faculty, nurses and many others.
In October 2012 Dr. Hafez was awarded the very prestigious University of Michigan Clinician of the Year Award. Dr. Hafez was nominated by his peers and was the first Urologist at the University of Michigan Medical Center to receive this award. Below are the excerpts from nationally recognized physicians, spanning varied disciplines, who nominated Dr. Hafez.
“We have many superb clinicians in our department and in other clinical departments throughout the Health System. Of all of these extraordinary individuals, a few might rise to the level of Dr. Hafez, but none that I know of surpasses him as one of our finest clinical crown jewels. Khaled tackles the most difficult cases in renal cancer and is adept in all other parts of urology as well. He is a consummate clinician and a superb educator. An unusual number of patients go out of their way to send notes of praise for his tireless clinical efforts and grace under pressure in very difficult clinical situations. I can’t think of what this department would be like without Khaled.” – David A. Bloom, M.D., Jack Lapides Professor and Chair, Department of Urology.
“It gives me great pleasure to give my strong endorsement of Khaled Hafez for the clinician of the year award. He is a very productive and well-respected member of the Department of Urology. His operative skill combined with excellent teaching and academic productivity makes him a strong candidate for the Outstanding Clinician Award.” – Darrell A. Campbell, Jr., M.D., Henry King Ransom Professor of Surgery, Chief Medical Officer and Chief of Staff, University of Michigan Health System.
“His keen intellect, energy, demeanor and focus on excellent clinical outcomes make Dr. Hafez a role model for all of us at the University. I wholeheartedly endorse his nomination for the Outstanding Clinician Award.” – Richard L. Prager, M.D., Professor of Surgery, Head of the Section of Adult Cardiac Surgery, and Director, Cardiovascular Center.
“Khaled Hafez has a very compassionate professional nature that has endeared him to many of his patients and their families. His explanation and directness in the most desperate cases involving urologic cancers are received with the realization that he truly cares about those under his watch. As a role model, in the clinic, in the operating room, and at bedside, he truly represents the best of our clinicians.” – James C.
