Pediatric Surgery

The Michigan Difference: Evolving, transforming and driving the future of children's surgical care

Families from all over the world come to the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital for our pediatric surgery expertise.  Our surgeons have a long history of providing advanced, compassionate, multidisciplinary care for fetal patients, premature babies, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. Each year, our teams perform thousands of surgical procedures ranging from routine procedures to complex operations, from hernia repair and appendicitis to transplant, trauma surgery and robotic surgery. This unparalleled level of deep surgical experience is important for families because even a routine diagnosis can require a skilled pediatric surgeon supported by the full resources of a dedicated children’s hospital.  Our surgeons are internationally recognized as experts in a wide range of specialties including minimally invasive surgery, pediatric surgical oncology, fetal diagnosis and treatment for congenital birth defects, pediatric trauma, and surgical procedures for intestinal failure.

A legacy of innovation

As one of the nation's most established pediatric research programs, our physicians are known for their relentless pursuit of innovation and quality improvement. We bring this creativity and innovative approach to every condition we treat, and every patient we see.

  • Extra-corporeal life support (ECMO) for children suffering from cardiac and respiratory failure was born and refined here, and we are still one of the world's largest and most sophisticated ECMO programs.
  • Through the Pediatric Device Consortium, our surgeons collaborate to create new tools and devices that improve pediatric surgery.
  • Our extensive leadership in research offers our patients access to the latest clinical trials, and we are often one of only a few centers offering access to certain therapies, such as the lung-growth trials for patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
  • In 2011 we opened the doors to our all new 12-story children's hospital, featuring a dedicated pediatric emergency and trauma care center and a state-of-the-art operating room suite featuring intra-operative MRI capabilities.

Our driving focus is to continue to improve the procedures, processes and technologies that change the lives of children around the world.

What we offer

We perform all pediatric surgical procedures, from the simplest to the most complex. Our physicians from every surgical subspecialty, from cardiac to transplant, work closely with a full range of pediatric subspecialties at Michigan Medicine – including anesthesiology, cardiology, pediatric oncology, radiology, pathology and nursing – to ensure your child receives exceptional care. This is where the Leaders and Best come together with advanced technologies and breakthrough treatments that change lives.
