The U-M Pituitary and Neuroendocrinology Center: A Destination for the Treatment of Pituitary Disorders

The U-M Pituitary and Neuroendocrine Center is one of the first dedicated comprehensive pituitary programs in the country. For more than 20 years we have provided timely evaluation and treatment of patients with disorders of the pituitary gland and surrounding area of the brain. During their first visit, patients are generally seen by senior endocrinologist Ariel Barkan, M.D. and neurosurgeon Stephen Sullivan, M.D., both skilled in evaluating and treating patients with acromegaly and Cushing's disease, those with prolactin-secreting or non-secreting tumors of the pituitary, and those with craniopharyngiomas, meningiomas, dermoids, epidermoids, chordomas or other lesions in the region of the pituitary.

Most of the pituitary patients are seen in close collaboration with the U-M Department of Neurosurgery, and patients are offered options including surgical tumor resection (trans-sphenoidal endoscopic and skull base surgery), radiosurgery, radiation therapy and every type of medical management.  In addition, patients with the full spectrum of pituitary diseases are seen by experienced pituitary endocrinologists at the Metabolism, Endocrinology & Diabetes Clinic. We see over 300 new patients with pituitary lesions and perform between 120 and 150 pituitary surgeries each year, making U-M’s one of the largest pituitary practices in the country, with among the best surgical outcomes.

Specialty services regularly performed in our center include assessment of pituitary function, inferior petrosal sinus sampling and intelligent replacement of pituitary hormonal deficiencies. Our multi-disciplinary pituitary team includes dedicated physicians specializing in:

  • Endocrinology
  • Neurology
  • Neuro-ophthalmology
  • Neuropathology
  • Neuroradiology
  • Neuro-oncology
  • Radiation oncology
  • Dynamic testing of pituitary function

We participate in clinical trials of experimental medications for pituitary diseases and many of our patients are treated with drugs currently not widely available. For example, we are one of only four sites in the U.S. participating in a trial of the use of pasireotide LAR for the treatment of Cushing’s disease.
