CGSP HHS Response

A message from the Comprehensive Gender Services Program (CGSP) at Michigan Medicine regarding our commitment to our transgender, non-binary and gender nonconforming patients:

On June 12, 2020, the US Department of HHS issued a statement which explicitly prohibits discrimination in health care based on ‘biological sex’, removing previous protections that also included gender identity and expression. As members of Michigan Medicine who care for transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming patients, we are concerned that this reversal could erect further barriers in accessing healthcare, which will widen existing health disparities.  CGSP, Michigan Medicine, and the University of Michigan remain committed to our non-discrimination policy, which outlines that patients and employees cannot be discriminated against based on sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.  We at Michigan Medicine continue to stand by the transgender community, and remain committed to serving patients of all gender identities and expressions; we are actively working to expand access to gender-affirming care, to improve employee training in gender-affirming care, and to improve our own policies and processes to better care for patients, families and visitors.
