Dr. Fullen received his undergraduate degree from Rochester Institute of technology in Rochester, New York in 1982, an M.M.Sc degree from Emory University in 1986, and his M.D. degree from Emory University in 1990 during which he had an Armed Forces Health Profession Scholarship. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991. He was called to active duty and served with the United States Navy attached to the 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, North Carolina from 1991-1994. He completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan from 1994-1998. Following residency, he completed a dermatopathology fellowship at The New York Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, New York from 1998-1999.
Dr. Fullen was an Assistant Professor in the Pathology Department at Albany Medical College from 1999-2000. He moved back to Ann Arbor Michigan and joined the Departments of Pathology and Dermatology as an Assistant Professor in the Section of Dermatopathology in 2000. He was promoted to Associate Professor and Professor of Pathology and Dermatology in 2005 and 2012, respectively.
While on faculty at University of Michigan, Dr. Fullen has served as Director of the Histology Laboratory (2002-2006), Director of the Dermatopathology Fellowship from 2006-2013, and Director of Dermatopathology from 2012 to present. He is actively involved in clinical service, teaching medical students, residents and fellows and research. As evidence of his dedication to teaching, he has received the William B. Taylor Teaching Award from the Dermatology Department in 2002 and The Faculty teaching Award in Pathology in 2006. He has authored or co-authored over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international scientific meetings. He is currently a Dermatopathology Section Editor for Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and on the Editorial Advisory Board of the American Family Physician.
