Across Michigan this Saturday, a chance to get risky medications out of homes and into safe disposal

U-M's Michigan-OPEN team and community partners in 46 counties offer National Drug Takeback Day drop-off locations

Author | Kara Gavin

People across Michigan can dispose of unneeded medications this Saturday at more than 80 locations across 46 Michigan counties and in northern Indiana that have partnered with a U-M team that's working to fight a national epidemic prescription drug misuse and abuse, and reduce the risk of accidental poisoning and overdose.

The Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network (Michigan OPEN) has worked with hospitals, pharmacies, community organizations and police departments around the state to host medication take back events on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Research has found that about 70 percent of the opioid pain medications prescribed for surgery go unused and those medications are not disposed of. This increases the potential for these medications to be diverted back into the community or contaminate waterways. However, Michigan OPEN’s efforts with take back events have led to more than 9,600 pounds of unused medications and approximately 172,700 opioids being collected and properly disposed of.

Take back events provide a safe process for disposing of unused medications of all kinds while protecting communities, children and the environment. Learn more about safe medication disposal and Takeback events throughout Michigan by visiting http://michigan-open.org/.

The following sites have partnered with U-M; to find other locations across Michigan and the entire U.S. that will take medications on Oct. 26, visit https://takebackday.dea.gov/ and https://recovertogether.withgoogle.com/prevention/.  To find locations across Michigan that take medications back year-round, visit https://michigan-open.org/safe-opioid-disposal/disposal-map/.

Note: Washtenaw County held its Takeback Day events on Oct. 19, but drop-off locations are available year-round on the Michigan-OPEN map.
