Hundreds of U-M Health System doctors listed among the Best Doctors in America and metro Detroit's ""Top Docs""

Hundreds of physicians from the University of Michigan Health System have recently been recognized as among the best in the country, or among the best in metropolitan Detroit, by two different independent ratings.

In fact, the new national list of the Best Doctors in America includes 372 U-M physicians, up from 294 who were named in the last listing two years ago. This recognition, based on recommendations from peers nationwide, puts these U-M physicians among the top 3 to 5 percent of American doctors in their specialties.

At the same time, 214 U-M physicians are featured in Hour Detroit magazine's annual "Top Docs" issue, having been voted among the best in the metropolitan Detroit region by their local peers. The list is in the magazine's October issue.

On both the national and regional lists, UMHS doctors outnumber those affiliated with any other health system in Michigan. U-M physicians were recognized in nearly every medical specialty category in both listings, reflecting the broad scope of adult and pediatric care provided at UMHS.

The national list is compiled every two years by Best Doctors, Inc., and based on an in-depth survey of more than 40,000 physicians in 43 specialties and more than 400 subspecialties of medicine. Each was asked, "If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?", and their responses were scored and analyzed. Each nominated physician was screened and asked to provide information about his or her practice.

In all, more than 1,600 faculty physicians treat patients at UMHS hospitals and health centers; all are U-M Medical School faculty members and belong to U-M's Faculty Group Practice. Several hundred other physicians, including 20 with U-M affiliations on the Best Doctors in America list, hold adjunct U-M faculty appointments. This means that most of their practice is in the community but that they help educate U-M medical students and residents; some may admit patients to U-M hospitals.

The Best Doctors database of physicians is used by patients, families and other physicians to seek expert medical resources and guidance. Access to the full database is provided through employer-based benefit plans. Best Doctors was founded in 1989 by two physicians affiliated with Harvard Medical School, whose goal was to provide greater access to dependable, high quality medical information and care for individuals with serious illness and injuries.
