Since 1983, the Housing Bureau for Seniors has helped more than 14,000 elderly people — most in frail health and living on very low incomes. We are a non-profit organization, and there are no fees for our services.
These services are made possible by financial support from Michigan Medicine, Washtenaw United Way, the Cities of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, the Office of the Services to the Aging, Ann Arbor Foundation, and other public and private agencies, as well as contributions from local businesses, civic clubs, foundations, and individuals.
Every year we must raise funds to continue our work. Your contributions are welcome. You can name Housing Bureau for Seniors in your will, give gifts of stock or other securities, or include us in your annual giving.
Ways to Give
Give online through Leaders & Best online giving.
In order to maintain an even flow of services for our clients, an endowment fund has been established. We know that during economic hard times it is difficult for our donors to sustain their financial support. However, it is during these same times that our clients need us most. Eventually, the annual interest from this fund will help maintain our program services even during difficult times. Our current goal is a fund balance of $100,000.
When making your estate plans, please consider the Housing Bureau for Seniors. Our endowment is managed by the Business and Finance Division of the University of Michigan. Fund managers in this office have the tools to assist with your charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust or your bequest. Contributions of gifts of stock or other securities may be added to the endowment fund as well.
Donations are tax-deductible and eligible for State of Michigan income tax credits as public contributions.
As always, we appreciate your generous support.
Donations of Gift Cards, Phone Cards and More
Many of our clients are seniors who live at or below the poverty level and face difficult financial situations. They may go without basic necessities that ensure or improve their safety and comfort, such as home heating. When people are short on funds, they may not be able to afford a phone or pay to use public transportation.
Some clients have incomes that are just above the eligibility guidelines for a program that could assist them financially. On their limited incomes they cannot afford basic home repairs. In these cases, we must rely on donations for the needed services.
Donations that will make a difference in the lives of our clients:
- Gift cards for groceries
- Phone cards for essential communications
- Gift cards to stores that sell home heaters, insulating materials for winter weatherization or materials for home repairs, such as a new screen door
- Bus tokens for transportation
- Financial assistance for major household cleaning
- Financial contributions to the foreclosure loan fund
Gifts in Kind
Our operating budget covers the essentials. However, we would like to enhance our effectiveness and support our efforts to provide high-quality service to clients and the larger community. Gifts in kind are non-monetary items of tangible personal property or other physical assets that represent value to the Housing Bureau for Seniors. Examples include:
- Ooffice equipment
- Office furniture
- Gas cards
- Air miles
If you believe you have a potential gift in kind, let us know!
