Trauma is the leading cause of death between the ages of 1 and 14 years nationwide, and results in temporary or permanent disability for millions of infants and children annually.
The Pediatric Trauma team at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is committed to combating traumatic injuries through advanced medical care, innovative education programs, leadership in advocacy and research, and aggressive prevention and safety programs.
Our Level I Pediatric Trauma Center is a leader in trauma evaluation, stabilization, treatment, and care of children who have experienced a traumatic injury. The Level I designation means we have been certified by the America College of Surgeons as providing the highest level of emergency and surgical care to pediatric patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are fewer than 40 Pediatric Level I Trauma Centers in the entire nation, and only three in Michigan.
In addition, we are one of only two children’s hospitals in Michigan verified by the American Burn Association to provide pediatric burn care.
Not only do we have the experience that comes from providing trauma care for more children than most other hospitals, but we have the expertise that can only be developed through commitment to research that helps explain the factors at play in traumatic injuries in children, and the best methods for education and prevention.
Advanced Pediatric Trauma Care
Our clinical services include emergency, diagnostic, surgical and acute care as well as comprehensive rehabilitation services. Our commitment is to help injured children get back to healthy daily activities as soon as possible.
Our new dedicated pediatric emergency department and trauma center includes 31 exam rooms and observation bays with hazmat capabilities.
Over 10,000 patients with traumatic injuries are seen in our emergency department every year, many of which require admission to the inpatient units of the hospital. Our trauma specialists follow these children from the time they enter the hospital through discharge and often into follow-up care through our outpatient clinics.
Surgeons and nurses with expertise in treating traumatic injuries are available around the clock to assess and treat children with traumatic injuries. Our multidisciplinary team includes pediatric specialists in general surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, urology, anesthesiology, and rehabilitation.
As part of our commitment to patient and family centered care, social workers, child life specialists, psychologists and spiritual care advisors are available to help you and your family cope with and understand the treatment your child is receiving.
The C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital transport team includes three Survival Flight twin engine helicopters, one fixed-wing jet, a mobile intensive care unit and ground transport access from all regional EMS providers. Our dedicated children’s hospital helipad provides direct, uninterrupted access for transport patients.
For patients transferred to Mott from outside the local area, our unique partnership with the Ronald McDonald House of Ann Arbor provides many of our families lodging in either the Ronald McDonald House right around the corner from the hospital or the new in-hospital Ronald McDonald House featuring 12 rooms with private baths.
Innovative Research and Education
In addition to providing world-class trauma care, our physicians and staff are also leaders in research, education and advocacy on a state and national level.
- The trauma team is dedicated to reduce the burden of pediatric trauma through effective injury prevention programs in communities both statewide and nationally. The injury prevention team creates practical tools and guidelines for families, professionals, and policymakers to make a real-world impact on injury prevention awareness.
- Our research faculty focus on translating research into action to prevent and effectively treat pediatric traumatic injuries. Areas of focus include teen driver safety, reducing risk-taking behavior, child passenger safety, post-injury care and recovery.
