Ophthalmology

The Kellogg Eye Center of the University of Michigan Health System offers adults and children across Michigan and the United States the latest and most effective treatments for all eye conditions and diseases. Ophthalmologists diagnose and manage both simple and complex vision problems that can, if left untreated, have a devastating effect on a person’s ability to see clearly.

This section presents key measures of the quality of care for all patients treated at the Kellogg Eye Center and for patients with specific diseases, such as cataracts, retinal detachment, strabismus (a condition where the eyes are not aligned, also called crossed eyes), and glaucoma. It also provides measures of quality for several important eye operations, including corneal transplants, refractive surgery (to reduce a person’s dependence on glasses or contact lenses) and oculoplastic surgery (reconstruction of the tissues around the eye).

In evaluating our performance, it is important to consider several types of measures, including the volume of operations performed and the success (or outcome) of the operation.

Procedure volume is the number of times a procedure was performed and is used to assess clinical experience and expertise. Studies have linked higher volumes with more successful outcomes for some types of procedures. Why is This Measure Important?

This measure provides a general view of the activity at the Kellogg Eye Center at University of Michigan Health System by showing the overall number of eye operations performed in the past five years.

How is UMHS Performing?

The number of eye operations performed at the Kellogg Eye Center is large and increasing. Our ophthalmologists have considerable experience treating complex patients, and our program is growing.

In this section, we evaluate the success of the eye operations by measuring the occurrence of complications, including reoperations and infections. A lower score means fewer complications and better performance. The graphs show that patients who underwent an eye operation at the Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan Health System rarely experienced complications.

Why is This Measure Important?

This is a measure of the percentage of patients who underwent an eye operation at the Kellogg Eye Center and had to return to the operating room within 30 days for a reoperation that was not originally planned.  This measure of unplanned operations is one factor that can be used to describe the quality of care provided during the first operation, although there are other reasons for unplanned reoperations.  For this measure, lower percentages are better.

How is UMHS Performing?

During the past five years, the percentage of unplanned reoperations has fallen below 2%. Unfortunately, there are no national rates of reoperations to which we can compare our performance. However, our goal is to reduce reoperations as much as possible.

Why is This Measure Important?

This is a measure of the percentage of patients who underwent an eye or eyelid operation at the Kellogg Eye Center and had an infection afterwards. Infections are rare, but can seriously affect a patient’s vision. Infections can be caused by factors that exist during or after the operation, such as the presence of bacteria around the eye and the patient’s general health and ability to resist infection. Sterile surgical techniques and antibiotics are used to prevent infection. For this measure, lower percentages are better.

How is UMHS Performing?

The percentage of postoperative eye infections at the Kellogg Eye Center is very small. The most recent results show that for every 1,000 patients that undergo an eye or eyelid operation, 1 experiences an infection within 30 days afterwards. Unfortunately, there are no national rates of postoperative infections to which we can compare our performance. However, our goal is to reduce postoperative infections to zero.
