Dr. Zubieta's work focuses on the neurobiological bases of mood disorders, with specific interests in the areas of aging and its interaction with affective disturbances. As main research tools we utilize positron emission tomography, single photon emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Neurochemical systems being explored as important in the development of affective symptomatology include the cholinergic, monoaminergic, opioid and GABA-benzodiazepine networks. The goal of our work is to understand and delineate trait- and state-associated variations in brain neurochemical function in the mood disorders, and their relationship to treatment response and overall outcome of these patients. An emphasis is placed upon gender differences in brain neurochemistry and their relevance to the manifestation and prevalence of mood and cognitive disturbances in women.
