Research

Dr. Gilsdorf’s research program focuses on identifying ways to prevent middle ear infections in children. To that end, her laboratory works closely with scientists in the School of Public Health to find molecules on Haemophilus influenzae—the most common bacteria causing middle ear infections—that may be used as a vaccine or as a target for interfering molecules. In addition, her research has defined the molecular epidemiology of Haemophilus influenzae and its association with otitis media and has discovered improved ways to characterize these bacteria in the laboratory. Dr. Gilsdorf’s research laboratory has been funded for many years by research awards from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders and the National Institute of Heart, Lung, and Blood.
