Lung Disease and Respiratory Care (Pulmonary)

The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is committed to caring for patients with lung disease. Our mission is to deliver excellent patient care, to develop new knowledge about the lungs in health and disease and to train individuals to be outstanding clinicians and researchers. We are proud to be recognized around the world for our excellence in all of these realms.

The clinical focus of our division is respiratory disorders, such as asthma, emphysema, lung infections, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, shortness of breath and cough, as well as critical illness, including shock, respiratory failure and multiple organ failure. This clinic is staffed by pulmonologists from the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center.

Our specialized diagnostic and therapeutic services include:

  • Assisted Ventilation Clinic – serves adult patients, who use ventilatory support in the home setting.
  • Complete Pulmonary Function Testing
  • Dyspnea and Cough Clinic - diagnoses and treats shortness of breath and chronic cough.
  • Lung Volume Reduction – improves quality of life of emphysema patients by reducing volume of lungs by 20-30% using surgical stapling devices.
  • Lymphangioleiomyomatosis Clinic – treats the progressive lung disease, which largely affects women.
  • Methacholine Challenge – a test used to diagnose asthma.
  • Pulmonary Exercise Testing
  • Occupational Medicine Evaluations
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation – an 8-week program to reduce the impact of chronic lung disease.
  • Respiratory Therapy
  • Transplant Program
  • Women's Respiratory Clinic - dedicated to the care of female patients with respiratory disease, particularly those with smoking related lung diseases.

Our investigative programs seek to increase our understanding of lung biology and disease, and utilize cutting edge approaches. We constantly strive to translate discoveries made at the bench into practices that will benefit patients. Major research interests include pulmonary inflammation and immunity, lung injury and repair, fibrotic lung disorders, obstructive lung diseases, cancer and antimicrobial defense mechanisms.
