Why Choose Michigan for Your Brain and Neurological Care

The University of Michigan’s multidisciplinary neuroscience team is made up of more than 70 nationally recognized neurologists and neurosurgeons. Leading the way in brain, spine and nervous system care for close to 100 years, patients have access to services that can be found at only a handful of places as well as cutting-edge treatments with the latest research.

We provide care for patients with all forms of neurologic disease. Specialties and care include, but are not limited to:

  • Brain Cancer and Tumors: The brain is a complex organ, as such; a comprehensive team of specialists treat both cancerous and non-cancerous brain and the spinal cord tumors. Treatment options are discussed in a weekly tumor board meeting – which is where more than 30 physicians, pathologists and nurses will put together a treatment plan to determine the best possible outcome for the individual patient.
  • Epilepsy Program: Provides inpatient and outpatient services for patients with seizure disorders through the Comprehensive Epilepsy Team – a multidisciplinary team of professionals that includes neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and vocational counselors. We see patients in an outpatient setting where we establish a treatment plan designed specifically for them. Areas of treatment could include inpatient monitoring, brain mapping and epilepsy surgery.
  • Movement Disorders Program: Offering treatment options like Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor; as well as treating the rest of the entire movement spectrum through surgical and medical options.
  • Stroke Program: The multidisciplinary stroke team treats patients that meet certain health issues that could predetermine a stroke; those who need emergent care that are suffering from a stroke and being treated with tPA in a timely fashion; and those that are recovering from a stroke in a certified Primary Stroke Center stroke unit by the Joint Commission.
  • Neurointerventional Suite: The first of its kind in the nation – which makes it possible to both detect and repair strokes, brain aneurysms and even rare conditions all in the same room. The suite is especially helpful for stroke patients in need of endovascular techniques for removal of clots for cerebrovascular conditions like thrombolysis  – treatment that has to be delivered within eight hours of the onset of symptoms.
  • Neurological Intensive Care Unit: This 15-bed unit focuses upon the treatment of critically ill neurological patients cared for by an interdisciplinary team that includes physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and physical therapists.

Through our comprehensive approach to care, we are exploring every avenue before offering an informed treatment plan to our patients. We aren’t just treating a particular disease, we are treating you.
