What is a Video Visit?
A video visit is a real-time, face-to-face visit with your provider using a smart phone or tablet to connect. Our goal is to relieve the burden our patients face, especially patients who live far away from the University of Michigan medical campus. In some cases, we offer telephone visits to patients when appropriate.
Video visits are offered for more routine cases that allow patients to receive follow-up care in the comfort of their home, office, or other location within the State of Michigan. This form of follow-up care is a safe alternative that allows patients to get the appropriate attention after surgery while minimizing the time, expense, and inconvenience of travel.
Eligibility for a Surgery Video Visit or Telephone Visit
Patients who undergo certain uncomplicated procedures in acute care surgery and emergency surgical services may be eligible for a video visit or telephone call for follow-up care. Uncomplicated procedures include cases that have demonstrated low complication rates in the past and generally require shorter hospitalizations. These procedures include laparoscopic cholecystectomy, appendectomy, and hernia repair.
When it’s time for you to be discharged, your surgeon will be able to determine if you are eligible for a video visit or a telephone call for follow-up care. If you are eligible, you will have the option of choosing either a video visit/telephone call or traditional care.
